A Day Out

on BBC Two England

A season of Alan Bennett 's films and plays for television starts with his gentle observation of a cycling club's trip one summer Sunday in 1911. As the group of men and youths leave the soot and smoke of Halifax behind, they argue and tease, talk about temperance and socialism and encounter the occasional cow.
First broadcast in 1972, it was shot in black and white and directed by Stephen Frears.
