The Book Programme

on BBC Two England

Introduced by Robert Robinson Charles Kingsley at Eversley
Last week was the centenary of the death of CHARLES KINGSLEY -author of The Water Babies. Poet and priest, reformer and propagandist, he was long a thorn in the side of the Victorian establishment. He was rector at Eversley in Hampshire from 1844 to 1875 and it was there that he wrote most of his books. Susan Chitty , author of The Beast and the Monk, one of two new biographies of Kingsley, revisits Eversley to recall his life there. Also, ROBERT ROBINSON dips into a new collection of photographs and illustrations of ghostly phenomena - Ghosts: the Illustrated History.
