The Conquest of Everest

At 11.30am on 29 May 1953,
Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tensing reached the summit of Everest - the first men ever to scale the world's highest peak. A few days later, on Coronation Day, news of the success of the British expedition, led by Sir John Hunt , reached London.
