The World About Us

on BBC Two England

Into Orbis
Forty-two million people are blind and millions more have diseases which can lead to blindness. Orbis, a converted jet manned by volunteer surgeons and nurses, is one response to this terrible problem.
Join this 'flying M*A*S*H' team in Bangladesh and follow them as they share their skills with local doctors, and often learn from their hosts as well. Then this medical circus flies on to Thailand, Nepal, Iraq ... In much of the world the blind rate a very low place in a nation's priorities, so often the mere arrival of the shining, white eye-hospital attracts the interests of national rulers. Orbis changes attitudes.
