Written and presented by General Sir John Hackett
The most prized of all British decorations for valour is the Victoria Cross, which is put ahead of all other honours, decorations and awards for bravery, civil or military. But there are many other medals awarded for valour, and in this series GENERAL SIR JOHN HACKETT looks at some of the rewards given to the British serviceman, and at the conditions in which they were won. Although the use of medals as military awards is comparatively recent, they have a long history as an art form to commemorate important people and events.
This first programme traces the history of the medal from the times of the Greeks and Romans to its introduction into Britain under Elizabeth I.
