Harold Williamson revisits The Pop Preacher
Paul Jobson could always make them sit up and take notice. The young curate turned his church crypt into a disco and talked sex in a language teenagers could understand. It was the Swinging 60s and he was certain he could get them back to the church. He failed, but he hit the headlines
-then left for a quiet post in the country.
Now he's back in another south London parish as rector. This time he's after the whole family-with a four-ale bar in the crypt. The takings keep a roof on his church, and his ideas get royal approval with a visit by The Queen Mother. But does draught bitter win worshippers or just darts throwers and domino players?
