Bahia
Narrated by STEFAN KALIPHA
Bahia is the city where Brazil began 430 years ago. First the Portuguese came with swords in their hands, then the slaves - three and a half million of them - with chains on their feet. They built a city they call Bahia -The Bay. No other town in the new world has preserved so many traces of Africa with its finery, its cadences, its palm-oil stews, its cults and-above all-the exciting rhythms of its music and dances. In this musical portrait of a city, we follow little Roberto Santos a 12-year-old black boy-around his Bahia to discover the mysteries of Capoeira and Candombole, the excitement of Maculele and Samba, the way of life of a million people.
