Who Was Charleston Jimmy?

on BBC Radio 4 FM

From hod-carrier to successful contractor, Ian Hawkins was in the building trade around London for 20 years before giving it up and moving back to West Wales to become a full-time writer. However, he soon missed the companionship and the practising of old skills, so found himself work, renovating and extending a house on the coast. One day on the site, he recalls the men he used to work with when he was young, and their talk of one of the best, and fastest bricklayers of them all 'Charleston' Jimmy. With Les Claxton, Vic Galley, Bob Harris, Alf Lawrence, Billy Rich, Jock Swan, Alexander Stanley Wilson
