By 1942 relations between President Roosevelt and Charles de Gaulle were beginning to sour. Roosevelt regarded the Frenchman as a nuisance and insisted that Churchill keep him in the dark about the imminent invasion of French North Africa. This decision only sought to deepen the rift between the allies and led to betrayal and murder as Roosevelt and Churchill tried in vain to bring the resilient Frenchman to heel.
