The World About Us

on BBC Two England

A special report
Afghanistan - a Valley Against an Empire
A remarkable record of the resistance put up by the Mujahidin-the Freedom Fighters-of the Panshir Valley in Afghanistan, against the might of the invading Soviet Army.
Led by their brilliant young commander, Ahmad Shah Massoud they have repulsed the Soviet invaders of their country time after time. With little more than their courage and their unshakeable belief in Islam, they have held off attacks by an enemy vastly superior in numbers and equipment. In order to safeguard their own way of life in some of the most beautiful mountain valleys in the world, the Mujahidin are fighting continuously in an increasingly savage war. Written and narrated by Simon Winchester
Presented for the BBC by DAWN A. SOMPER Series editors ANTHONY ISAACS and PETER JONES
