November 1940: Ruben Roberts, a deputy station master, makes the shocking discovery that he owes everything in life - his job, his marriage and his home - to the sexual favours that his young wife Selena has been forced to grant to her abusive godfather, the rich and powerful railway chairman Arthur Grandridge.
