Once Upon a Union

on BBC Two England

Written by JOHN MCGRATH
Winter 1707 and the Scottish Parliament meets for its most decisive vote ... to stay Scottish or join England to make Great Britain.
Tonight - because of the argument over devolution - Robert McKenzie takes a step back in time, and takes television with him, to explain how it all started, what made Scotland give up independence and why England needed the union.
From the Scottish Parliament, he introduces the final debate upon the Articles of Union:
Outside in Edinburgh's Parliament Square, Donny B. MacLeod reports upon the mood of the crowd awaiting the result.
Interviews with: Film reports include:
Donald MacCormick with the Dumfries covenantors as they ceremoniously burn the Articles of Union.
Tom Mangold investigating the rumour that England bribed the Scottish politicians.
Mike Neville , on the border, looking at Scotland's economic plight.
And James Cox reporting from the farm of Fletcher of Salton - the politician who really did believe that Scotland could govern itself better than Westminster would govern it.
