Horizon: Whose Coast?

on BBC Two England

This week's programme in the series on Man and Science Today.

We're all aware of the damage we're doing to our natural surroundings yet we seem powerless to stop it. 1970 is European Conservation Year - 21 countries trying to get people to care for their environment before it's too late.
But what are the problems facing modern Britain? We have a precious coastline - a coast that we all use, enjoy, and ill-treat.
Everywhere we find dismal and often tragic evidence of how with an increasing population and powerful technology we are demanding too much of our coast. By failing to work with nature we are rapidly degrading our surroundings.
Tonight's programme looks at the work of biologists trying to understand the harm we are doing to our coast and to the seas around our shores. They believe we must find ways of dealing with the problem before it has disastrous consequences for all of us.
