Night Waves

on BBC Radio 3

Though the first gallery to show Picasso's Guernica, a centre of anti-fascist talk in the thirties, and host to exhibitions by many of the 20th century's artistic giants, the Whitechapel Art Gallery has still kept close links with the East London Community around it. As the Whitechapel celebrates 100 years, Richard Coles profiles the gallery and its impact on people who have worked, shown and visited or simply stepped in from the rain there. Plus a new production of Marlowe's Edward reviewed, as award-winning Michael Grandage directs Joseph Fiennes in the title role at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield.
