Horizon: Trial and Error

on BBC Two England

The Rise and Fall of Gene Therapy. Jesse Gelsinger was born with a rare genetic condition and died because an experiment went terribly wrong. Gene therapy is a simple concept: for any disease caused by a genetic mutation, defective genes are replaced with healthy ones. Jesse agreed to take part in a safety trial, but what happened next led to his death, the destruction of a scientist's career and the demise of gene therapy itself.
