John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough and ancestor of Winston Churchill, was a superb war leader in the field but was sacked from his command, caught in a three-cornered relationship with his wife Sarah and with Queen Anne. Military historian Correlli Barnett presents the man as a passionate human being, very different from the diplomatic and military machine portrayed by some earlier historians. (R)
