After winning his case against Philip Bosinney, his wife's lover, Soames returns home to find his wife Irene has fled. Broken, he visits his father, James Forsyte, and tells him of the disgrace that threatens the family. James advises him to follow Irene and get her back.
Meanwhile, Philip's fiancee June visits his rooms to find out why he did not appear in court. Irene is there and an unpleasant scene follows. While this is taking place a police inspector arrives at Soames's house and tells him that Philip Bosinney has been killed and that they suspect suicide.
