Glories of a Great Building
Introduced by Christopher Burstall
Gloucester Cathedral was founded nearly 900 years ago by William the Conqueror's private chaplain. Today, as then, the Norman piers in the nave arrest the eye and give massive support to the ancient building, but succeeding generations have re-shaped the Choir, adding grace and a new kind of order to the original plan. How can we approach such a complex structure to get the best out of it for ourselves?
This week marks the 250th anniversary of the Three Choirs Festival, now being celebrated in Gloucester Cathedral, and tonight's film looks at the architecture, the history and the use of that great building.
A spectacular event. What a star, this tough 1000-year-old. (Daily Express)
