The Lawn Tennis Championships
The opening day of the world's greatest tennis tournament direct from the All England Club. Featuring the first round of The Men's Singles championship.
JIMMY CONNORS , as defending champion, has the honour of opening play on the Centre Court. Since his first Wimbledon title in 1974 Connors has compiled a remarkable record in the tournament, reaching the final three times and the semi-finals three times; but last year's triumph over JOHN MCENROE was only his second win. McEnroe comes to Wimbledon after one of his least successful years but recent victories over the Czech IVAN LENDL have boosted his belief that he, too, can win a second title. Lendl has not enjoyed the grass courts of Wimbledon in past visits but is determined to prove that his ranking as the world's number one is justified.
They are just three of the 128 contenders for the most prestigious title in tennis. Harry Car penter introduces BBC's live coverage during the championships and keeps you up to date with news and results from all 18 match courts.
Bjorn Borg , five times winner of the championship, joins the BBC team throughout the fortnight with his expert views and opinions on play.
