For thousands of years, animals were regarded by humans as sources of food, clothing, transport and sport.
But, in the sixties, it was claimed that many species, including tigers, elephants and whales, were under threat of extinction.
The well-meaning intentions of the conservationists, however, have resulted in the destruction or displacement of whole rural communities. Were the campaigners right to raise the alarm? Last in the series.
