Francesco Rosi is best known for his films chronicling the many faces of modern Italy and often based on real events. Salvatore Giuliano , which opens a short season of Rosi films, takes as its theme the turbulent life of a notorious bandit and 'freedom fighter' in the late 1940s. The film itself led to the Regional Government of Palermo agreeing to the official enquiry into the Mafia in Sicily.
