Every Sunday, 200 years ago, the rector of St Mary Woolnoth in the City of London used to preach on the same subject - the horrors of the African slave trade.
His congregation had good reason to believe him, for the Rev John Newton had once been the captain of a slave ship.
Here was the terrible truth from the mouth of a slave captain who became a 'hell-fire' preacher. Here was the evidence which led to one of the greatest of all political crusades.
