In the year 1840 Helene de Solanges, a rich young aristocrat, was faced with a marriage of convenience with a certain Comte
Horestan de Valiancourt. On the day of her official betrothal ceremony she suddenly plunged into a wild escapade, which upset the calculations of her guardians. It resulted, however, in satisfactory conclusion. In her diary Helene wrote a full account of her indiscretion, which now provides her great-great-grand-daughter with amusement.
