A scene from the Oedipus Tyrannus of Sophocles (lines 224-512)

A single detail from a great painting may reveal some of the most significant images or motifs of the whole work. This passage from the Oedipus Tyrannus is presented in this light. It is, in fact, more than an isolated scene, for in this first clash between king and prophet Sophocles traces in miniature the curve of the whole tragedy.
