'Irene, wife of Soames Forsyte, the Man of Property, has fallen in love with Philip Bosinney who is already betrothed to Jolyon's daughter June. So far, Soames appears to have been the last one to notice this, since he is used to his wife's icy treatment in any case. But at last the local gossip comes to his unwilling ears, and a horrible scene takes place between them when he tries to 'insist upon his rights ' as a husband. Meanwhile, the outraged man is also bringing a case against Philip Bosinney as architect working on the task of designing a country house for him. Bosinney has overstepped the price agreed upon.
The gossip in Timothy's house on the Bayswater Road has now reached fever pitch, as young Jolyon continues with the story of the fabulous Forsytes.
