Darwin's Dream
Darwin's theory of evolution transformed our view of the world. But what would he think of the progress we have made since?
Tonight, Darwin is reincarnated - in the form of Lee Montague - and visits various laboratories in modern Britain to ask searching questions of the scientists themselves. He does not know what a gene or a chromosome is-let alone viruses, enzymes and DNA. As a result the scientists have to explain with clarity and ingenuity how the beautiful, fascinating, organised chaos of life at the molecular level works.
Darwin discovers that, in spite of enormous advances which have brought us to the brink of being able to manipulate evolution ourselves, we do not yet fully understand the rules which govern the harmony of the natural world. Charles Darwin played by LEE MONTAGUE
