Lothar Schmid (WEST GERMANY)
Schmid pulled off the surprise of the tournament by beating top seed Korchnoi in the previous round.
Stean was Korchnoi's Second in those matches against Spassky and Karpov for the World Championship in 1978. He could do himself and his former chief a lot of good by defeating the German publisher. Expert analysis WILLIAM HARTSTON
