Horizon: The Case of ESP

on BBC Two England

Is it possible to read someone's mind or foretell the future? Do some people have psychic powers or a sixth sense? Most scientists would emphatically say no, and that the many people who believe in such things are credulous, irrational and unscientific.

But in the last decade a number of psychologists and physicists have braved the hostility and derision of their colleagues and begun systematic laboratory research into extra sensory perception - ESP. Clairvoyance, telepathy, psychokinesis, have all been rigorously investigated under controlled conditions.

This specially-extended "Horizon" reports on the recent findings, many of which appear to challenge the understood rules of modern science. We talk to the leading critics of the new research, who reflect the views of the scientific establishment that ESP really stands for Error Some Place - and we show some scientists' recent attempts to answer their critics by taking ESP out of the laboratory and putting it to the test in the world of commerce, crime, archaeology and warfare.
