Henrik Ibsen

on BBC Two England

Certainties and Doubts
'Anyone who wants to understand me must know Norway - those winters and those mists. Oh how they long for the sun ...'
Scandinavia, March 1898. Celebrations for the 70th birthday of the greatest writer Norway had ever known: banquets, performances, speeches and some very awkward moments -for the old man was a stickler when it came to etiquette. This programme tells the story of Ibsen's life, through those events, his plays and the words of critics and admirers.
Including excerpts from Brand, A Doll's House, The Wild Duck, The Master Builder, John Gabriel Borkman and When We Dead Awaken - with certain characters played by their 'real-life' selves, when there are hints at autobiography....
