After his dramatic victory two weeks ago at Dijon ahead of Alain Prost's ailing Renault, the Finnish driver is three points clear of the hospitalised Didier Pironi , with just one point separating third-placed Prost from former world champion Niki Lauda and Britain's John Watson.
