Hollywood in the Sixties: Too Late Blues

on BBC Two England

Tonight's film in this season of outstanding films of the past ten years from the movie capital stars Bobby Darin, Stella Stevens

In 1959 actor John Cassavetes created a sensation with Shadows, a highly personal film shot on a shoestring budget on New York locations, and using a large measure of improvisation.
Paramount signed up Cassavetes and put the full resources of the Hollywood machine at his disposal. "Too Late Blues" was the result - a story of a dedicated and talented jazz musician 'Ghost' Wakefield, played by Bobby Darin, his affair with an attractive but insecure vocalist, Jess Polanski (Stella Stevens), and the crisis in their relationship which develops as a result of a bar-room brawl in which his courage is tested and found wanting.
