Taking Liberties

on BBC Two England

The B-Word
The B-word is Bhopal.
It is the town in India where, six years ago, poisonous gas escaped from a pesticide plant belonging to the American company Union Carbide, killing more than 2,500 people within hours. Carbide quickly accepted 'full moral responsibility' for the disaster and faced bankruptcy due to a multi-billion pound compensation claim. Today the people of Bhopal have yet to receive any compensation. Carbide, meanwhile, has flourished. In the first programme of a new series,
Taking Liberties investigates how the company that was responsible for the worst industrial disaster in history got away with it while the victims feel that they have been abandoned and forgotten. Producer Nick Catliff
