The World About Us

on BBC Two England

Bali and the Flames of Death Narrator JOHN SHRAPNEL
On 31 January this year the small town of Ubud in Bali cremated their last prince, Agong.
Tjokorda Agong Sukawati - a much-loved and renowned prince of Bali - died in July last year. His cremation date had to be arranged by complicated astrological prediction.
Afterwards even the old men agreed that it had been the most impressive cremation they had seen; the height of the tower in which the body was carried, the beauty of the huge mythological carved creatures in which the body was burnt and the number and Importance of guests invited was Unprecedented. There will probably never be another like it.
