Halsey , Professor of Social and Administrative Studies, University of Oxford, argues that the Marxist emphasis on class interest trivialises status At the same time the liberal emphasis on status constitutes the trivialisation of class. The ultimate implication is that both theories lead to false doctrines of historical progress and neither deals adequately with the problem of social order.
