The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures

on BBC Two England

5: Scales, Synthesisers and Samplers
Harpsichords, spinets, clavichords, pianos and synthesisers. They are all keyboards, but how are they related scientifically? In the fifth and final Royal Institution Christmas Lecture, Professor Charles Taylor traces the development of the modern keyboard and the contribution of computers to today's music. The lecture includes a demonstration at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop of how the signature tune was composed from a series of 'real sounds' using modern digital technology.
