by Charles Dickens.
Adapted for television in thirteen parts by P. D. Cummins.
The day for the escape arrives and Pip, Herbert, and Startop row Magwitch down the river. They stay at an inn and at dawn row out to await the paddle-boat, but a galley comes alongside and the steersman shouts to Magwitch to surrender to the law. Magwitch recognises Compeyson in the galley, pulls him overboard and fights with him under the water. Compeyson is drowned, but Magwitch is rescued though badly injured. He is taken to Newgate and sentenced to death, but dies peacefully with Pip beside him before the sentence can be carried out.
