The Bomb. Despite a relentless stream of conventional bombing raids on the Japanese, America was determined to use its latest weapon - the atom bomb. With unconditional surrender not forthcoming from Japan, on 6 August 1945 the B-29 plane Enola Gay took off on a special bombing mission to Hiroshima. (R) (S)

8.05 Reckoning. The aftermath of the war saw the forging of the UN, suggesting a new approach to national diplomacy. On the other hand, the Nuremberg trials implied a need for retribution. Germany was apportioned between the victorious Allies leading to the creation of the Iron Curtain. (R) (S)
