England, having lost their opening game in Scotland, looked for a better all-round performance against the Irish who have already lost their two matches this season.

Wales led by Mike Watkins hoped to continue the improvement shown in their victory over Ireland, faced France, the favourites for this year's championship, who have not won in Cardiff since 1968.
