A series of films about
Britain from 1945 to 1951. A Home of our Own
1945 brings the worst housing crisis in British history. Prefabs are a temporary home for many, but thousands of homeless families find deserted army camps provide the only hope of shelter. A housing manager remembers how people were so desperate:
They would leave a baby in the in-tray in the hope we would find them somewhere to live.
But for architects it is an exciting time, bringing a chance to turn theory into practice with the creation of New Towns and the rebuilding programme in many large cities.
