Around 400 children a year are born in Britain with cystic fibrosis, the commonest genetic disease in the country; many other children suffer from different genetic disorders - Downes syndrome, spina bifida, anencephaly. New methods, however, could detect, defects at a very early stage, but this involves working on human embryos.
