Naum Kleiman, Curator of the Eisenstein Musuem in Moscow, introduces the conclusion of Eisenstein's best-known epic, "Ivan the Terrible"
Part 2 and Part 3 starring Nikolai Cherkassov
The second part of Eisentein's planned trilogy about Tsar Ivan IV - "The Boyars' Plot" - recounts how Ivan returns to Moscow to face his enemies.
Eisenstein was fascinated by colour, and the last section of Part 2 shows the striking way he uses colour to heighten dramatic impact. Only one brief filmed sequence of Part 3 survives. It gives a fascinating insight into the way Eisenstein intended to portray Ivan's progress from megalomania to madness.
(A Russian film with English subtitles. In colour and black and white)
