Taking Liberties

on BBC Two England

A series of seven films presented by David Jessel. 5: A Criminal Way to Treat an Illness
Tony Russell is schizophrenic. He was forced on to the streets, attacked his mother and had to kill his father before the system would acknowledge that he was ill. He is now in Broadmoor.
Taking Liberties probes an Orwellian system which criminalises mental illness and calls it community care; a system which takes those who should be receiving hospital treatment and allows them to drift into homelessness and vagrancy; a system which all too often ends in tragedies like that of Tony Russell.
