A series of six films which explore the achievements and fascination of practical bird-watching.
With Tony Soper. 5: Boxed Birds
Owls do it, kestrels do it, blue tits do it, but pigeons started it all - nesting in boxes.
Pigeons, then ducks, were encouraged to breed for our consumption, and nesting boxes provided the stimulus. Now, with sites for hole-nesting birds at a premium, boxes have even encouraged new birds to colonise Britain - like the goldeneye in Scotland. An occupied box in the garden can be a source of enjoyment but boxes can be useful too, for the study of species that might otherwise be difficult.
