Tree of Thorns
The umbrella-like, thorny acacia tree is home, larder, food, shade, and hunting-ground for a wealth of African creatures. But it is the making of such trees, the long struggle from seedling to thorn bush and to full maturity over more than a century, that has the greatest implications for the future of these African woodlands. It is a story of striving for space, of coping with threats of drought and fire, and intriguingly, of how the interaction of the thorn tree with animals like the elephant, the giraffe and even a tiny beetle is re-shaping the African bush.
