For the Schools: Living in the Commonwealth: The British West Indies: 1: Trinidad

on BBC Television

View in Radio Times

Today is a historic date in the Commonwealth. In Trinidad this afternoon H.R.H. Princess Margaret formally opens the newly-elected legislature of the new Federation of the British West Indies. Trinidad, with its multi-racial population, can almost be regarded as a miniature of the new nation now coming into being. Today's programme shows something of life and work on the island, the important oil industry, and the famous pitch lake. The lighter side is represented by calypsos and steel bands, which are now almost as well known here as in their native country.
Introduced by Errol John.

The sequence on oil drilling in Trinidad from the film 'New Explorers' is shown by courtesy of Columbia Pictures and British Petroleum.
