On I January 1951, the doings of a family in the Borsetshire farming village of Ambridge were first heard on the Light Programme. Thirty years and 7,800 episodes later, The Archers has become a national institution. In 1955 the death of Grace Archer on the evening ITV was launched. provoked a public furore; Doris Archer 's death in October caused an even greater outcry.
Gillian Reynolds salutes the world's longest-running serial. She talks to some of the present producers and writers, and reflects on the programme's imaginative hold on its audience with some of its fans, including SUSAN HILL , MICHELINE WANDOR. JONATHAN RABAN and JEFFREY RICHARDS
