Old Adam Baxter is something of a local legend at Broxborough, with his fine learning and his books and his Saturday-night gatherings of friends who come to hear him read Shakespeare or Homer, or to discuss any subject that is to be found in the Encyclopaedia - at least the first nine volumes of it. Ask us about anything from Aaron to Pragmatic Sanction and we're infallible; but put up one that comes between Prairie Oyster and Zymotic and we're sunk.
But there are other gaps in the apparent learning of Adam Baxter, as some of the not so friendly members of his Saturday circle are anxious to demonstrate-though their success, if success it can be called, brings an even more surprising revelation... R.A.
