First Easter

on BBC Two England

A series of films exploring the new realities of faith in eastern Europe.
5. Uwe Holmer and his wife
Sigrid, like many Christians in East Germany, have suffered under the repressive Communist regime of the ex-State Leader Eric Honeker. In
January 1990 Honeker, now despised and reviled, was admitted to hospital for cancer surgery. On his discharge, it was Pastor Holmer who gave Honeker and his wife a place to live. As a result, Holmer's family have received hundreds of abusive letters and even bomb threats.
