The Mekong
In the last of this BAFTA award-winning series
William Shawcross travels up the Mekong - 'the river of solidarity' according to the Vietnamese. But he found no easy passage. Vietnamese officials were suspicious of his motives and anxious for his safety. His journey began in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, and took him by local ferry and gunboat to Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia, and on by military helicopter to the magnificent ruins of Angkor Wat, now a war zone.
