Disaster: The Channel Tunnel Fire

on BBC Two England

Five drama-documentaries reconstructing events at the heart of recent disasters.

On 18 November 1996, 34 people travelling on the Eurotunnel shuttle from Calais became trapped in smoke-filled darkness after fire broke out on the train deep beneath the seabed. As 450 firefighters struggled to deal with the blaze, a catalogue of technical and communication failures held up rescue attempts and left some victims so traumatised they have been unable to return to work. The programme, narrated by John Nettles, highlights the problems of implementing safety recommendations.
